Day 1

From Four Seasons Campers head north on the A82 towards Glencoe and onto Fort William.  Continue past Neptunes Staircase on the A830 towards Arisaig and Mallaig.   The road runs parallel to the Jacobite Steam train railway line made famous in Harry Potter as the route the Hogwarts Express took.  Turn off the A830 at Arisaig where there are an abundance of campsites and beautiful beaches that look towards the Inner Hebridean Islands of Eigg and Rhum. 

Things to see and do

  • Stop at the pretty village of Luss on Loch Lomond
  • Enjoy ‘healthy’ fish and chips from The Real Food Café in Tyndrum
  • Stretch your legs along part of the West Highland Way at Bridge of Orchy and enjoy some great pub food at The Bridge of Orchy Hotel
  • Neptunes Staircase  is a series of canal locks that link the Caledonian Canal to the open sea and  is well worth a visit.   At this time of year you should spot some beautiful Scandinavian yachts coming through the canal on their way to the beautiful West Coast and Inner Hebrides.
  • Glenfinnan Monument erected in memory of Jacobite rising and men who fought for Prince Charlie’s cause and the Glenfinnan Viaduct – a great engineering construction
  • Jacobite West Highland Line made famous in the Harry Potter films by Hogwarts Express
  • Stop at Loch Leven Seafood Café Stop https://www.lochlevenseafoodcafe.co.uk/ for seafood (highly recommended by other customers!)   by Ballahulish Bridge for amazing oysters, scallops and langoustines

Day 2

From Arisaig continue onto the fishing port of Mallaig where you can get the ferry to Skye.  The campervan is charged as a car so it is not expensive- it is 4.9m for booking.  Book in advance unless doing trip in winter (there are restaurants in Mallaig where you can wait and wander around the harbour area). The Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Skye takes you to Armadale.  Head north through Portree or north west at Sliglachan and visit Talisker Distillery on route towards Loch Greshornish or Neist Point.

  • Neist Lighthouse

Time to travel   Mallaig to Loch Greshornish 2 hours 15mins including ferry

Day 3

Head north to Uig for the ferry to Tarbert on Harris and spend Day 3,4,5 on Harris and Lewis.  Drive south west to the beautiful Niseabouist beach with stunning views across the Sound of Taransa.

  • Harris Tweed shop –  Tarbert
  • Visit famous Scarista Beach

Time to travel   Ferry Uig to Tarbert (2 hours) then 11 miles (20 mins) to Talla na Mara

Day 4

Travel north around the west coast to Hushinish

Things to do:                     

  • Archaeological tour – see attached information
  • Huisinus Beach

Campsite: Minch View Campsite on east coast of Harris (Camping and                                                                                Caravanning Club)

Time to travel: Talla na Mara to Huisinis (1 hour)

Day 5

Meander north through Tarbert into Lewis and head west through Achmore and Kinlochroag then north to Kneep to the stunning beaches beside Traigh na Beirigh campsite.

Things to do:                     

  • Gearrannan Blackhouse Village
  • Dun Carloway Broch and Visitor Centre

Camping                              Campsite: Traigh na Beirigh Campsite

Time to travel: Talla na Mara to Kneep 1hour 42 mins

Day 6

Take the ferry from Stornoway to Ullapool and explore Ullapool and the North West Highlands for a day.

Things to do

  • Museum nan Eilean – in Lews Castle – home to some of the Lewis Chessmen- Stornoway
  • Blue Pig Studio – Callaway, Lewis
  • Enjoy dinner and music (if there is something on at The Ceilidh Place in Ullapool
  • Walk along the stony beach at Loch Broom
  • Climb Ullapool Hill
  • Visit Ardmair lighthouse
  • Travel to Knockan Crag Nature Reserve and look at various sites around this Geo Park https://www.nwhgeopark.com/

Camping                              Campsite: Broomfield Holiday Park, Ullapool

Driving Time                      Ferry time Stornoway to Ullapool 2 hours 30 mins

Day 7

 Drive south to Inverness then down to Culloden, south east of Inverness, then head down the A82 down Loch Ness and Loch Lochy to Spean Bridge and back down the A82 to Glencoe.

Things to do                      

  • Visit Culloden Battlefield
  • Loch Ness
  • Urquhart Castle
  • Fort Augustus
  • Evening meal at The Clachaig Inn by Red Squirrel

Day 8
